2010-07-13 - Epp, Edmund John

August 15, 1947 –
July 13, 2010

Edmund John Epp passed away unexpectedly on July 13, 2010 surrounded by his wife, his sons, daughters-in-law, brothers and sisters. He was just a few weeks shy of his 63rd birthday. He knew since he was a young boy that he’d be in heaven with Jesus someday.
Ed was born in Rosthern on August 15, 1947 and was the second child of Helena and John Epp.  In the years that followed, Ed and his older sister Frieda were joined by siblings Phil, Elvira, Alvin, Louise, Carl, Verna and David.
He attended the one room schoolhouse in Rosthern until Grade 8 because that’s as high as the education system went there. He worked hard on the farm with the rest of his family raising animals, farming and being a part of the local community.
Ed had a love of many things. These included hunting, fishing and unbeknownst to many, even cooking. Making soup was a pastime for him and you would often see quart after quart of soup stashed away in the fridge ready for faspa for another day.
In his 20s, Ed obtained his GED and then attended Kelsey in order to obtain his Farm Machinery Mechanic papers. It was shortly after his schooling that he met and married Mary Friesen. They were married October 4, 1975. It didn’t take long for them to add first Lowell and then Lyndon into their little family. Ed and Mary have now been married for nearly 35 years.
Ed farmed for several years with his brother-in-law, Harry Friesen, while Lyndon and Lowell were young. He also spent most of his working years in Gouldtown and Watrous as a mechanic. Eventually, when the boys were older and on their own, Ed and Mary moved to Waldheim and settled there for the last 14 years.  They finally had a place to establish some roots, make some close friends and have a loving and supportive church to be a part of.
Ed and Mary have four grandchildren: Lowell and Kristin have Gaige (age three) and Blake (age one). Lyndon and Candace have Kianna (age six) and Spencer (age four). Ed’s face would just light up whenever speaking about his grandkids to anyone who would listen. He loved taking them for rides on his garden tractor and being Grandpa to them.
Over the years, Ed could be found fixing farm equipment for nearly anyone. He was the guy people would call if they needed a hand or opinion in that area. He was also heavily involved with the Gideons and enjoyed the work he did with them. The church choir was also important to him and he was faithful to attend choir practice every week.
A highlight for Ed in the last 10 years was going up to Pinehouse to fish with his brother Carl. He loved sitting in the boat trying to catch “the big one”, but what he truly loved about being on the water with his rod was the visiting that could happen between him and Carl.
Ed is predeceased by his parents Helena and John Epp as well as his brother-in-law Jim Rempel.
He is survived by his wife Mary, two sons and four grandchildren: Lowell and Kristin (Gaige, Blake), and Lyndon and Candace (Kianna, Spencer); siblings: Frieda Rempel, Phil (Shirley) Epp, Elvira (Bernie) Theissen, Louise (Bob) Friesen, Alvin (Norine) Epp, Carl (Naomi) Epp, Verna (Joe) Hucul, David Epp; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Service was held Monday, July 19, 2010 in Mennonite Brethren Church, Waldheim, SK with Rev. Jake Pauls and Carl Epp officiating.
Pallbearers were Phil Epp, Alvin Epp, Carl Epp, David Epp, Anthony Epp, Alden Epp, Caleb Epp and Jeremy Epp.
Interment took place in the Waldheim Cemetery.
Arrangements were in care of Funk’s Funeral Home, Rosthern, SK.

2010-07-09 - Hill, Lillian Eileen

Lillian Eilleen Hill
May 21, 1932 – July 9, 2010

“O what a day that will be, when my Jesus I shall see…”  A hymn that Mom loved so dearly came true on July 9, 2010, when she went to be with her Lord.  Lillian Eilleen Moe, named after her mother, was known as Eilleen and graced this world on May  21, 1932, the fifth child of six children. Mom went to school three miles from Frontier, SK and of course is from the era when, as she told us, she would ride to school in the winter with the horse and buggy. Grandma would heat bricks, and that is how they would keep their feet warm. Growing up on the farm meant there was always a lot of daily chores and work to do, which was probably the reason Mom became such an amazing cook. Many meals were served from her kitchen table. Enjoying recess more than school, she decided to put her talent into giving to others as she  embarked on her job at the Frontier Hospital and later worked for two other families giving her love  and attention to the family and their needs.
Auntie Joyce has told us that Mom was incredibly popular when she was young. She loved to dance, and often talked of the many songs that she had “lost shoe leather to.” The Orange Blossom Special was one of her favourites and would set her toe to tapping even in her later years! Mom married Carl Johnson and from that union two beautiful children were born, Ernie and Stella. This marriage was not to be forever, and several years later she would wed Gilbert Hill, and they would be graced with Tereasa.
Her gift of creativity was portrayed in her passion for cooking, sewing, cake decorating, carpentry and gardening. Only Grandma could match Mom in making something out of absolutely nothing.  Her decorating skills were second to none as she would put this and that together with a little splash of something else and it would be gorgeous! It was a also a standing comment in the community that anyone could eat off of mom’s floors – they were right! Mom also made sure her girls were always dressed in one of her amazing outfits sewn by her own hands!
Each year many elderly women at Consul looked forward to a specially decorated birthday cake and tea in their honour. Mom showered love on all the elderly and made them feel so incredibly special during these “special” occasions! We wish you all could have seen our yard. Mom had a way with flowers, and again, decorating her yard, to make it look like a park. With wagon wheels, various wooden figures, and planters made and painted by her own hands, she could craft a marvel that was a spectacular sight to see!
In Mom’s last years her strong faith in God was rekindled and saw her through many health issues. She became a prayer warrior, and it leaves a void in the hearts of her children and grandchildren. We know that the loving fervent prayers of our mother have ceased…but with that, came the joy of heaven! We’re sure that when she stepped into glory, her family met her! Grandma led her family over to the piano and as Uncle Gil rippled those keys, the gorgeous harmony rang all over heaven of the incredible voices of that family!
Four siblings passed on before mom: Verna, Gordon, Donald and Gillman. Her only surviving sibling, Joyce Findlay (David) resides at Guelph, Ontario. Mom is survived by her son Ernie, eldest daughter Stella (Lyle), and Tereasa (Darrell). She fiercely loved her grandchildren, and they had an incredible relationship with her…Amber (Justin), Maureen (Taerum), Christy (Paul) and Tyler. Great grandbabies filled such a void for mom as they came in her later years and she was able to lavish her love on Isaiah and Mya (Paul and Christy’s children). Mom was also close to many of her nieces and nephews and loved to get updates on how all were doing.
The Funeral Service was held Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at Rosthern Alliance Church with Pastor John Hein officiating.  Pallbearers were Harry Penner, Henry Zacharias, Curtis Hassett, Bill Laughren, Taerum Boone and Paul Sanderson.
Interment took place in Rosthern Cemetery.
Arrangements were in care of Funk’s Funeral Home, Rosthern, SK.

During earlier years many happy times were spent with his children skiing, tobogganing, boating, fishing and he passed along an appreciation of the outdoors to his children.

2010-06-12 - Peters, Mary Elda

PETERS, MARY ELDA was born on November 3, 1923 to Fred and Agatha (Janzen) Dirks near Mennon, Saskatchewan. She learned to do many farm chores at home. She had health problems as a child and thus had just part of her sixth grade in school. When she was about 15 she had a ruptured appendix and was told she only had a slight chance of remaining living. It was on the operating table that she gave her life to the Lord Jesus Christ and He became her Saviour. On July 30, 1939 she was baptized along with her three sisters and they joined the Dalmeny M.B. Church where they had attended all their lives.
Their family was poor and so as the girls grew older they left home to work in Saskatoon. Here she did light housekeeping and began doing massage work with Barney Neufeld (a licensed masseur). She worked with him for 10 years and learned many things. Then on October 16, 1954 she married Arthur Peters in the Hepburn M.B. Church and joined this church. They made their home on the Peters farm near Hepburn. She decided not to tell her customers where she was but it didn’t take long and many were asking where is Mary?  It was not long and she was again at work massaging people and while she was at it she also set their bones back in place. She continued in this work for about another 30 years.  She helped hundreds of people each year she worked and had many compliments on the way in which she did it. She then had breast cancer and after surgery and radiation treatments she just did not have the strength to do it any longer.
Mary was active in her church with the ladies aid, ushering and seldom missed a service. She enjoyed singing and so after her cancer her son began buying Gaither videos to listen to as well as other music videos. She enjoyed this immensely and enjoyed going to the concerts in Saskatoon when special groups came. When she had a stroke in 2004 that took most of her speech, her son liked to sing with her the old songs she knew. The specialist had told him it was a different part of the brain that controls your singing than your speech. She continued with this until her death. She went into St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon, on May 25 as the result of another stroke and passed away at about 9:35 pm on June 12, 2010 very, very peacefully with a huge smile on her face, with Art and Vic by her side.
She was predeceased by her parents Fred and Agatha Dirks, a seven year old brother Peter on Christmas Day, two brothers-in-law Cornie and Allan Voth, two sisters-in-law Elsie Dirks and Margaret Dirks, and a niece and nephew, also five miscarriages. She leaves behind her husband Arthur after 55 years of marriage, her son Victor, sisters Verna Voth, Anne Voth, Agnes Koop and brother Edwin Dirks and a brother-in-law Jakob Koop.
From her husband’s family she was predeceased by her parents-in-law Henry and Helena Peters, Don and Annie Braun, Frieda and Herman Fadenrecht, Peter Peters, Isaac and Bessie and Anne Peters, Clarence Peters, Clifford and Esther Jost, Erwin Peters, and Rueben Peters and several nephews. Mourning are Erica Peters, Elizabeth Peters, John and Hilda Sieweit, Ruebena Peters, Lydia Peters, Stanley and Justina Wichorek and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind many extended family and friends.
She was artistic and very creative; she loved the outdoors and nature. She was very supportive in everything her husband and son did. We would like her to be remembered as someone who made this world a brighter place to live in and for her love of her Saviour and Lord. May we meet again soon!
The Funeral Service was held on Thursday, June 17, 2010 from Hepburn Mennonite Brethren Church with Pastor Jeff Peters and Rev. Reuben Andres officiating.
Interment was held at Hepburn Mennonite Brethren Church Cemetery.
Mary’s favourite hymns were sung, “There’s Within My Heart a Melody” and “Count Your Many Blessings” with Agnes Jescke as the pianist. Pastor Jeff Peters gave the message and the Jescke Trio, Roland Jescke, Lydia Peters and Stan Dirks sang two musical numbers. Joanne Janzen read the eulogy and gave a tribute.
Pallbearers were Howard Jost, Dennis Voth, Dale Janzen, Ken Voth, Dean Peters and Clare Peters. Ushering was handled by Dennis Peters and Jack Braun.
Memorial donations may be made to Gideons International in memory of Mary Peters.
Arrangements were in care of Dalmeny Funeral Home (254-2022).

2010-06-05 - Dirks, Rueben

Rueben Dirks
June 16, 1924 – June 5, 2010

Rueben Dirks passed away peacefully into the presence of the Lord on June 5, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lois (nee Schmidt) their two daughters, Carrie (Brian) of Victoria, BC and Arlene (Eldon) of Christopher Lake, SK; seven grandchildren, Andria (Scott), Jeremy, Nicole (Aaron), Amber (Ryan), Kristine (Michael), Ryon (Robyn) and Jared; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Arthur (Mabel); sisters Martha (Ernest) and Viola (Ray).
He was predeceased by his parents Jacob and Susanna (nee Luetke), his sisters Elsie and Josephine, brothers Menno and Sylvester, brothers-in-law Walter Strobel and Ed Peters; sisters-in-law Verna Dirks, Matty and Nellie Dirks, grandchildren Daniel and Elijah Dirks and great granddaughter Angel Grace.
Rueben was born June 16, 1924 on his parents’ homestead northwest of Waldheim, SK. He attended Springfield Public School and took high school by correspondence. At the age of 15, he made a commitment to the Lord, and was baptized upon confession of his faith at the Salem Church, Waldheim, SK. He attended Bethany College, graduating in 1945. During the war, he did alternative service, on a farm at Bradwell, SK. Upon his release he enrolled at Tabor College, Hillsboro, Kansas. The following year he returned home and married Lois Irene Schmidt, August 31, 1947. Together they both returned to the US and attended Tabor College.
Due to financial needs his college education was interrupted by three years of public school teaching in the rural schools of Lehigh and Meade, Kansas. Having always had the desire to enter the Lord’s service, he heeded the call of the City Mission Board of our conference and became the pastor of the Logan Fontenelle Chapel in Omaha, Nebraska. It was during this time that he was ordained as a minister by his home church of Waldheim, SK. The three years at Omaha became the proving ground in his life, of the reality of the Christian life. The next eight years were given to pastoring the Bethesda Church of Huron, South Dakota. These were eight years of a very meaningful ministry, followed by two years of a traveling ministry in which the Biblical truths he had learned were expounded. He now re-entered Tabor College and graduated in 1965 with a German major. For the next three years he was a high school German teacher in Oakley, Kansas. His desire to preach the Word was still with him, so he applied to the Mennonite Brethren Foreign Mission Board. Together with his wife and two daughters, they left for Germany, where he pastored a small German congregation in Neustadt/Weinstrasse. This eight year ministry was a rich one in many ways. Having left Canada in 1946, 31 years ago, he now returned to Canada to serve as pastor of the Dalmeny Community Church for three years. His last nine years of employment were spent at the Home For The Aged in Rosthern, SK in a ministry to seniors.
Retirement became a time spent with the family, children and grandchildren. Camping expeditions were greatly enjoyed. Rueben was gifted as an optimist and a good communicator. Preaching the Word was primary. He loved good music and enjoyed singing. He will be greatly missed. “The time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” – 2 Timothy 4: 6-7. All praise belongs to God.
The family would like to thank Spruce Manor Special Care Home for their loving care of Rueben.
Interment was held at Salem Church Cemetery on the morning of June 10, 2010. The Memorial Service took place on Thursday June 10, 2010 from Dalmeny Community Church, Dalmeny, SK with Pastor Gary Sawatzky presiding. Scripture was read by Scott Werner, Jeremy Rayner and Ryon Epp. Tributes were given by Dian Block, Delmer Strobel and Dorothy Hamm. 2010-05-29 - Hiebert, Cornelius G

Cornelius G. Hiebert
February 4, 1938 –
May 29, 2010

Cornelius G. Hiebert was born on February 4, 1938 to Jacob and Katherina (Guenther) Hiebert in Osler, Saskatchewan.  He was raised on a farm near Neuanlage and attended Pembroke School.  He gave his life to Jesus when he was 19 years old and was baptized at Neuanlage Grace Mennonite Church.  He married Margaretha Fehr on October 20, 1961.
Cornelius and Marge farmed near Osler where they raised their three children. Their lives were filled with church activities, family, friends, music, yearly vacations and fishing trips.  Cornelius was a hard worker …but loved to make time for family activities. Even in the demanding days of summer, he often found time to hook up the boat and head to the lake to go water skiing with the family.
Cornelius had three main passions in life: God, family and farming. These he pursued with all his strength. He had a fierce commitment to Christ that helped him navigate life and fight the good fight of faith. He lead his family to know Christ…this is his greatest accomplishment!
Cornelius was one of the most persistent, determined people on the face of the earth.  Undaunted by setbacks, he would simply make a new plan and start again.  However, in 2002 Cornelius began experiencing the affects of vascular disease. Multiple small strokes began affecting his ability to manage daily activities.  Life as our family had once known it would never be the same.
Cornelius passed suddenly into eternity on May 29, 2010 with family by his side.  Cornelius leaves his beloved wife Marge, his three children Gail (Terrence), Murray (Deborah), Tamara (Johnny), and nine beautiful grandchildren (Jaden, Joshua, Gracie Janzen; Madison, Riley, Lauren Bueckert; Elle, Emma, and Eden Hiebert) and one more on the way.  He is survived by his siblings, Mary Giesbrecht, Tena Janzen, Peter Hiebert, John (Dawn) Hiebert, Helen (Peter) Rempel, Elsie (Bill) Siemens, Henry Hiebert, Dora (Ron) Adrian, Nora (Peter) Fehr.
He was predeceased by his parents Jacob and Katherina Hiebert, his sister, Martha Reddekopp, his brothers-in-law George Friesen, Jacob Janzen, Henry Reddekopp and Jacob Giesbrecht, and his sister-in-law Helen Hiebert.  He was also predeceased by his nephews, Bob Friesen, Irvin Hiebert, Eldon Hiebert, and his nieces Leona Reddekopp and Ruth Hiebert.
We take great comfort in the promises of God as we set our eyes on eternity.  “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has in store for us!”  1 Corinthians 2:9
The Funeral Service was held Friday, June 4, 2010 in the Grace Mennonite Church at Neuanlage, SK.

2010-05-21 - Pauls, Rev Jacob H

Pauls, Jacob copy

Rev. Jacob H. Pauls
August 4, 1915 to
May 21, 2010

Our dad has gone to his eternal home. Jacob H. Pauls died May 21, 2010 at the Warman Mennonite Special Care Home. Jacob was born August 4, 1915 to Helena (Unger) and Heinrich Pauls in Grigorievka, (Naumenko) Ukraine.
He was the sixth of seven children and his parents died when he was three. As a result, he went to live with his Unger grandparents with whom, at the age of 10, he came to Canada. Jacob spent most of his life in the Osler area. There he took his elementary schooling.
As a youth, he had odd jobs in rural Manitoba before working back in Osler for his brother-in-law, Cornelius Driedger. This is where he met the love of his life, Mary Schmidt. They married August 2, 1936, in the Osler Mennonite Church. For the next 69 years Jacob and Mary worked, played, laughed, cried, rejoiced and grieved together. Ten children were born to them. Raising nine children, farming and pastoring a church were not always an easy combination.
At age 22, Jacob was chosen as minister. He attended Bible School at Rosthern for two winters and then was pastor of the Osler Mennonite Church for 27 years. He helped establish and led the Warman Mennonite Church for several years. Jacob was also involved in establishing the Osler Mission Chapel.
He and Mary also spent several years in Mexico and Ontario helping in the German speaking churches. Their last years were spent in retirement around Osler and then in the senior’s home in Warman. Dad enjoyed travelling and camping in his younger years. He loved gatherings, visiting and the food that went with it, especially mom’s cooking.
Jacob followed current events, news and elections. He was an avid reader with his Bible being his favourite book. One of his greatest joys was his grandchildren. Each one can speak of his “bear hugs” and “whisker rubs”. He will be lovingly missed. Dad’s last 17 months were spent in the Warman Mennonite Special Care Home. We thank the staff for the compassionate care our father received.
Jacob was predeceased by his wife, Mary; his parents, Heinrich and Helena Pauls; infant son, Melvin; son Leonard; infant grandson, Robert; granddaughter, Mobandi; daughter-in-law, Verna and all his siblings, Helena, Maria Buhler, Margareta, Henry, Margareta Wiens (Ukraine) and Katie.
