2011-10-17 - Friesen, Tim AR

A.R. (Tim) Friesen
July 24, 1922 –
October 17, 2011
It is with a profound sense of loss that we announce the passing of A.R. (Tim) Friesen on October 17, 2011 in his 89th year.
Tim will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered, by his wife Goldie (Horn), his sons James and Derrel (Catherine) and grandchildren Erin and Christopher. He is survived by brothers: Arnold Friesen (Helen) and Bill Friesen, sisters: Merla Kroeker, Doris Horn, Elise Clay and Margaret Friesen, in-laws:Lora Mae Epp and Norman Ediger (Doreen), as well as many nieces and nephews.
Dad was born on the family farm in Tiefengrund on July 24, 1922. Soon after graduating from Rosthern Junior College he left to work with family in Vancouver and in Oklahoma. During his time in Oklahoma he met Goldie, where they were married on November 26, 1948. They lived in Clinton, OK for a short time before returning home to Saskatchewan. Dad spent eight years as the Wheat Pool agent in Laird and then in 1957 Mom and Dad took over the family farm – a decision they felt would be best for their family. In 2003, when health issues made it difficult to continue on the farm, they moved to Laird.
Dad lived his life with tremendous faith and a true sense of gratitude for all he had. He was generous to a fault, carrying a deep sense of responsibility for those in need. We will remember his patience and gentle manner, and will truly miss his sense of humour.
Someone once said that the people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money or the greatest accolades, they are simply the ones who care the most. Dad cared. He cared about his family, his community, his church and all those he had the pleasure of meeting along the way.
Tim was predeceased by his parents John and Wanda; siblings: Paul Friesen, Ed Friesen, Louise Ediger, Herb Friesen, Eldon Friesen, Elmer Friesen, and his twin brother Bob Friesen; in-laws: Sarah Friesen, Ruth Friesen, Edward Kroeker, Frank Clay, Ted Horn and Paul Epp.
An old proverb states, “Good men must die, but death cannot kill their names.” Tim’s name shall live on in the memories of those who loved him.
“When you are sorrowful look into your heart and you shall see that you are weeping for that which has been your delight.” ~ Kahlil Gibran

2011-09-24 - Bergen, Alice

Alice Bergen
July 17, 1922 –
September 24, 2011
Mom was born to Louis and Catherine Zulauf on the family homestead near Laird on July 17, 1922. She attended Stony Hill School until she completed Grade 8 and then quit school to help on the farm. Having lived through the “Dirty Thirties” she learned to “waste not – want not” and lived that way all her life.
She met George Bergen of Hague at a New Year’s Eve dance and it was love at first sight. They were married on July 27, 1956 and took up residence on the Zulauf farm with her father Louis and brother, Herman Zulauf.
Farm work was most important to the newlyweds, but so was starting a family! Katherine May was born in May 1957, followed closely by Connie Rose in September 1958 and Garry George in April 1960.
Mom was Dad’s partner in so many ways besides raising a family; helping with chores, milking cows, providing seeding and harvest meals in the field, as well as keeping house and garden. She always had a large flower and vegetable garden, and enjoyed planting new varieties of fruit trees and berry bushes. She was a great cook and loved to bake. Everyone remembers her famous chocolate chip cookies and jam jams.
Mom’s first bout with breast cancer happened in 1972, with round two following in 1982. She survived both attacks without needing further treatment. In 1975, Dad underwent lung surgery forcing him to retire from farming and Mom to become his “nurse”, changing his dressing twice daily for some 13 years. Throughout these changes in her life she still had time to be there for her children, making sure they were ready for school on time with lunch kits full of peanut butter and jam sandwiches as well as salmon and other delicacies.
When Garry married in 1982 and took over the family farm, Mom, Dad, and Uncle Herman moved to their new house in Laird. In eight years they were blessed with seven grandchildren and in 2010, a great-granddaughter. Mom thoroughly enjoyed each and every moment spent with them and had a special relationship with each one. After Dad passed away in 1990 and Uncle Herman in 1992, she continued to keep the household running smoothly on her own. Her garden and flowerbeds were some of the nicest in town and drew the admiration of many. She continued to focus on her grandchildren, attending many hockey games, recitals, volleyball games, softball games and later high school and university graduations.
Mom took great pride in the outdoors and spending time in God’s creation. She was able to accompany her family on several trips to Ontario, British Columbia and Prince Albert National Park. Trips to Ontario to visit the Lindner families were especially significant to Mom.
Mom had a great love for her church and was always willing to help serve at potlucks, pancake suppers and funeral luncheons. She treasured the Christmas Eve candlelight services and we don’t think she ever missed one.
Moms declining health necessitated a move to respite care in the Mennonite Nursing Home, Rosthern last December. She made the move with her usual grace and often remarked on the great care she received, saying “I don’t have to lift a finger, they wait on me hand and foot”. Following respite, she resided in Saskatoon personal care homes. In July 2011 she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and after several rounds of chemo treatments, contracted pneumonia and was admitted to Royal University Hospital on September 17. Again, no complaining, only remarking on the attentive care she received. In her words: “They’re well equipped here!” Mom passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family and God’s welcoming embrace, on September 24. Mom has been a wonderful example of strength, courage, graciousness and love.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy (Robert) Schultz and family Geoffrey Schultz, Alison Schultz; daughter Connie Zoerb and family Michael Zoerb (fiancée Jacki Andreen) and daughters Brynnlee, Austyn, and James Zoerb; son, Garry (Pearl) Bergen and family Matthew Bergen, Thomas (Jessica) Bergen, Nathan Bergen; and sister-in-law Helen Zulauf. She was predeceased by her husband, George; parents, Louis and Catherine Zulauf; son-in-law, Kerry Thiel, siblings, Martin Zulauf, Arnetta (Andrew) Peters and Herman Zulauf.
The Funeral Service was held Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Laird, SK with Pastor Jason Johnson officiating.
Pallbearers were Michael Zoerb, James Zoerb, Geoffrey Schultz, Matthew Bergen, Thomas Bergen and Nathan Bergen. Honourary pallbearer was Alison Schultz. Interment took place in the Stony Hill Cemetery.
Arrangements were in care of Funk’s Funeral Home, Rosthern, SK.
